The Mission Grille - Sister Bay, Door County WI

Mission Grille Sister BayThe Mission Grille in Sister Bay provides a highly recommended dining experience. Having eaten there several times I've never had a poor or sub-expectation meal.

The building itself is a remodeled church, and has charm and character in spades, a beautiful setting for your fine dining experience.

This is certainly an upper-level restaurant in terms of price (for the area), expect to pay around $22-$40 for an entree. Dinner entrees include Certified Angus Beef steaks and prime rib, pork shank, wild caught Salmon and Halibut from Alaska, Domestic spring lamb, duck, chicken, pasta, and fresh fruits and vegetables. They owners claim is that all sauces and soups, including lobster bisque and French onion soup, plus delicious desserts, are made on-premises.

The Mission Grille have adapted themselves to the changing economic times by offering 'scaled back' menu items at off-peak hours for a lower price. My most recent visit required an earlier than usual arrival, and I was pleased to have the option of selecting from the 5pm-6pm menu and having an appetizer and prime rib dinner for under $30. The Caesar salad was very good, the dressing clearly homemade. The prime rib was cooked perfectly, though I think the horseradish may not have been kitchen made.

On previous visits to the Mission Grille I've enjoyed their steaks, fish and pasta dishes, and always considered the food quality to be of a good standard, commensurate with the price level.

Service has always been first rate.

On my most recent visit there had been some changes, with the introduction of a Tapas area. The Tapas menu choices did not set me alight, they didn't seem very creative in their composition and descriptions, so I stuck with the conventional menu choices.

The wine list is something to behold at the Mission Grille. If you're a wine connoisseur you won't be disappointed. Selections range from mid $20's to $500 for a vintage Châteauneuf-du-Pape Their scotch selection is quite good too, though a little on the pricey side (it was necessary to part with $16.00 to enjoy a glass of my favorite Laguvulin 16 year old single malt).

It's worth mentioning my attitude towards restaurant dining in general, as a way of justifying dinner at the Mission Grille. Being a fairly good cook, I like to go out for a meal and enjoy something of a standard that would be hard to match at home. If I pay $25 for a meal, and it's something I could have created quite easily at home, and of a higher standard, then I'm naturally disappointed. Given that I tend to be disappointed quite frequently, when dining around Door County, my approach has been to dine out less often, but when I do, choose a place of higher than average quality. Overall I pay about the same for dining out each month, and I'm less frustrated by poor restaurant food quality.

The Mission Grille comes with a high recommendation, try it for yourself.
